Desert delight

Cradled among miles and miles of sand, at the edge of the Rub' Al Khali desert, lies Abu Dhabi, known for its sleek skyline and desert backdrop, but it’s also a sprawling archipelago of over 200 islands, offering an extraordinary variety of fishing environments, from tranquil mangrove shallows to the deep, open waters of the Arabian Gulf. Fishing is deeply rooted in the locals’ heritage, as it once was a lifeline alongside pearl diving and date farming, due to the limited options for agriculture.

Respecting tradition for a bright future

Carrying on the legacy of these traditions are Souad, Sam, and Elmer, with Elmer being so dedicated to his passion that he usually sneaks in some fishing before his daily profession at Fast Marine Boats. Fishing in Abu Dhabi is a vibrant blend of tradition, recreation, and sustainability, reflecting its cultural heritage and modern environmental priorities, which also shows in the Sustainable Fisheries Index, where Abu Dhabi ranked number one overall, with a score of 97,4%.

Catching on. Reeling in.

As they make their way out onto the crystal-clear waters, the crew is determined that today’s dinner will be locally sourced. Abu Dhabi’s waters are home to over 250 species of fish, including prized catches like Hamour (Orange-Spotted Grouper), Shaari (Spangled Emperor), Kanaad (Kingfish), and Queenfish. As they feel the distinct taps in the rods when the fish strike the bait, they quickly realize that their dinner plans will indeed come true.

The top fishing season runs from late October to May, when cooler waters bring fish to life. Come summer, the action slows as seasonal restrictions step in to protect marine life and keep the ecosystem thriving.

Another element of excitement.

Spearfishing in the clear UAE waters has deep cultural roots. Traditional Emirati fishermen used hand-crafted wooden spears and goggles made from the outer layers of tortoise shells and goat leather long before modern gear existed. Spearfishing offers a unique blend of adventure and relaxation. In addition to the full-body workout you get from diving and breath-holding, you also build strength, endurance, and lung capacity. It requires focus, patience, and calmness, similar to meditation.

The best way to end the day.

As the sun starts to near the horizon and the shadows get longer, the crew beaches on the shore that will be their dinner spot for the night. While they are waiting for the flame-grilled delicacies to cook, they pass the time by sharing their most spectacular fishing stories, about the ones that got away, or the biggest ones. Storytelling, laughing, and bonding are almost as important as the catch itself.

"Day turns into night, and another day of fishing turns into a desert delight.”
